How to calculate your Hijri age

  1. Choose Hijri if your birth date is written in Hijri, or Gregorian if it is Gregorian. The calculator converts between them for you.
  2. Enter the day, month and four-digit year (for example 1415).
  3. Your Hijri age appears first, followed by your Gregorian age, total days and your next Hijri birthday.

Worked example (by hand)

Birth date 20 Ramadan 1418 AH, today 11 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH:

  1. Days: 11 is less than 20, so borrow one month and add the length of the previous month (Rabi' al-Thani 1448 has 30 days in Umm al-Qura): 41 − 20 = 21 days.
  2. Months: after borrowing we have 4, which is less than 9, so borrow a year: 16 − 9 = 7 months.
  3. Years: 1447 − 1418 = 29 years.

Result: 29 years, 7 months and 21 days. The usual mistake is assuming every Hijri month has 30 days. In Umm al-Qura some have 29, which is why a calculator gives the precise answer. A second example and an age table by birth year are in how to calculate your Hijri age by hand.

The Hijri and Umm al-Qura calendars

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar (see the Islamic months in order) that starts from the Prophet's migration (Hijra) to Madinah. It has 12 months from Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah, each 29 or 30 days long. Umm al-Qura is the official Hijri calendar of Saudi Arabia; month starts are calculated astronomically for Makkah, while the start of Ramadan and the Eids is announced after the moon sighting.

When do you need your Hijri age?

Hijri age matters for matters tied to Islamic rulings, some Saudi regulations and documents dated in Hijri, school registration questions, and comparing ages in older Hijri-dated records. To convert a Hijri document date, use the date converter. For any official procedure, confirm which calendar the authority uses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Hijri age if I only know my Gregorian birth date?

Select “Gregorian” and enter your birth date as it is. The calculator converts it to Hijri automatically and shows your Hijri age in years, months and days.

How do I calculate my Hijri age by hand?

Convert your birth date to Hijri, then subtract it from today's Hijri date: years from years, months from months, days from days. For a rough figure, subtract your Hijri birth year from the current year 1448 AH.

Why is my Hijri age bigger than my Gregorian age?

Hijri years are about 11 days shorter, so the same span of time contains more Hijri years, roughly one extra year for every 33 Gregorian years.

Why do some sites show a Hijri age that is one day different?

Some use an approximate (tabular) Islamic calendar or assume every month has 30 days. We use the official Umm al-Qura table and the real 29- or 30-day length of each month.

How old is someone born in 1420 AH?

In 1448 AH they are 28 Hijri years old if their Hijri birthday has passed this year, otherwise 27. Enter the full date for an exact answer.

When is my Hijri birthday?

Below the result you will see your next Hijri birthday in both calendars and how many days are left. It arrives about 11 Gregorian days earlier each year.
